No Super Bowl Has Finished Without a Touchdown

Marcus Whitfield

Every Super Bowl through LX has featured a touchdown. See why the Patriots’ 13–3 win in Super Bowl LIII came closest, and which teams scored none.

No. Through Super Bowl LX in February 2026, every Super Bowl has included at least one touchdown. The closest was Super Bowl LIII in 2019: New England beat the Los Angeles Rams 13–3, with Sony Michel scoring the game’s only touchdown. It remains the only Super Bowl with just one touchdown between the two teams. USA TODAY’s historical summary establishes the record through the first 59 games; the NFL’s Super Bowl LX recap records touchdowns in the 60th.

That is different from asking whether one team has finished a Super Bowl without a touchdown. That has happened several times.

The closest: Super Bowl LIII

For three quarters, the Patriots and Rams managed only a field goal apiece. New England led 3–0 at halftime, and Greg Zuerlein’s 53-yard kick tied the game in the third quarter. Neither offense had reached the end zone. The Patriots’ scoring summary records just four scoring plays:

Quarter Scoring play Score, Patriots–Rams
Second Stephen Gostkowski, 42-yard field goal 3–0
Third Greg Zuerlein, 53-yard field goal 3–3
Fourth Sony Michel, 2-yard touchdown run; Gostkowski extra point 10–3
Fourth Gostkowski, 41-yard field goal 13–3

The breakthrough came on a five-play, 69-yard drive. Tom Brady connected with Rob Gronkowski for gains of 18 and 29 yards, putting New England within two yards of the goal line. Michel finished the drive with the touchdown that separated the teams. On the Rams’ ensuing drive, Stephon Gilmore intercepted Jared Goff near the end zone, ending that opportunity to tie the game. The NFL’s game report describes both decisive possessions.

The combined 16 points also made LIII the lowest-scoring Super Bowl, below the previous record of 21 in Miami’s 14–7 victory over Washington in Super Bowl VII. But even that record-low total included a touchdown. NFL scoring-record report

Teams that finished without a touchdown

Examples include:

  • Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl VI: Miami lost 24–3 to Dallas on January 16, 1972. Garo Yepremian’s second-quarter field goal supplied all the Dolphins’ points; Dallas scored three touchdowns. Game scoring record
  • Los Angeles Rams, Super Bowl LIII: Zuerlein’s field goal was their only score in the 13–3 loss. Official scoring summary
  • Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl LV: Kansas City lost 31–9 to Tampa Bay, scoring through three Harrison Butker field goals. The Buccaneers scored four touchdowns. Chiefs game report

Did Super Bowl LX change the answer?

No. Seattle and New England went through three quarters without a touchdown in 2026, with Jason Myers’s four field goals providing all the scoring. But touchdowns followed in the fourth quarter, including a Seattle interception return and two New England touchdown passes. Seattle won 29–13. NFL Super Bowl LX recap
